Who are we?
MAPS (Minority Association of Pre-medical Students) is the pre-medical portion of the national group "Student National Medical Association." SNMA is the oldest and largest organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of multiple nationalities. Its membership consists of more than 6,000 medical students, pre-medical students, residents and physicians. SNMA was established in 1964 by medical students from Howard University College of Medicine and Meharry Medical College School of Medicine. Due to their many initiatives since then, there has be a steady increase in minorities in medicine.
The UNC Charlotte Chapter was established in 2008 and we have been growing and contributing to UNCC pre-medical community for the past few years. We are a multi-cultural group and students from all backgrounds, ages and majors are welcome to join us for general body meetings, conferences, events, speakers, panels, volunteering, and other pre-medical activities (See Membership). Although UNC Charlotte does not have a pre-medical major, with the help of outstanding faculty and MAPS we have helped countless students pursue there dreams of a future in medicine.
"One small step for minority pre-health students, one GIANT leap for under-served communities in health care."
-Maritza Adonis, 2012-2013 National SNMA Pre-medical Board Member
